Understand the Domain Name System
August 31, 2007
Ever wonder why DNS systems came into existence? Efficiency. Every computer has a distinct IP address, and the Internet needed an elite method for obtaining these addresses and for managing the system as a whole. Enter ICANN. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number manages the DNS root of the Internet domain namespace. ICANN’s role is to manage the assignment of identifiers, ensuring that all users have unique names. The DNS system is run by a series of servers called DNS servers. ICANN manages the root DNS domains, under which are the top-level domains. It also manages: Organizational domainsGeographical domainsReverse domainsBeneath the top-level domains are other naming authorities such as Nominet, the UK’s naming authority. How does a DNS Query work? The process occurs in two parts. Firstly, a name query begins at a client computer and is passed to DNS client service for resolution. When the query cannot be resolved locally, DNS servers are queried. For example, when a web browser calls the fully qualified domain name www.discountdomainsuk.com, the request is passed on to the DNS client service to resolve the name by using locally cached information. If the query is held in the cache, then the process is complete. If, however, the query cannot be answered locally, the DNS client service uses a server list (ordered in sequence) to query external DNS servers. When a DNS server receives a query, it first checks to see if it is authoritive for that domain name. If it is authoritive, it resolves the name, and the process is complete. If the DNS server is unable to resolve the query, it in turns queries other DNS servers, using a process known as recursion. DNS servers make use of root hints to assist in locating DNS servers, which are able to provide the required result. In this way, DNS queries are minimised and the Internet is able to operate quickly and effectively. A typical query may run as follows: Client contacts Nameserver A looking for www.discountdomainsuk.com.Nameserver A checks its cache, but can’t answer, so it queries a server authoritive for the Internet root. The root server responds with a referral to a server authoritive for the .com domains. NameserverA queries the the .com server and gets referred to the server authoritive for www.discountdomainsuk.com.Nameserver A queries this server and gets the IP address for www.discountdomainsuk.com.Nameserver A replies to the client with the IP address.Queries can return answers that are authoritive, positive, negative or referral in nature. In the event of a negative answer, another DNS server is queried.

Does My Web Site Require A Web Database?
If your web site require constant updates and feeding of information, a web database is the solution. In short, this applies to web sites that handle online products, news feed, members- based subscription and other functions as well. Not only can a database provide easier access to information, it also automates most of your daily tasks. For example, running an book store requires massive amount of efforts in inventory and updating. However, if you have a database to play around with, you can actually hook up your online book store with your existing brick-and-mortar shop. Get a couple of scanning equipment and PC, updating your online book store can never be easier than scanning the barcodes!
Building Your Own Database
Sure, you can make your own web database if you know a little about programming. It is mostly hard work with tons of programming to do and not difficult as long as you have an adequate level of programming background. One thing to note is: your database requires robust database security measures to be set up. For those who are determined to give it a shot, there are many online forums that offer helpful tips and support in database building.

Do?s and Don?ts for the Internet Marketing Newbie (Part 1)
August 28, 2007
I, myself, being an internet marketing "newbie" (endearing term used to refer to people who have just started their own internet business and don’t know what the —- they are doing) have learned a few things and would like to share my observations, tribulations, and triumphs with my fellow "newbies". In sharing my experiences I hope I can help you avoid some of the pitfalls and obstacles you will face. Let’s try to avoid some of those "Information Overload" headaches as well. I don’t want you to walk through the same mud puddle if I can point it out and help you avoid it.
First, in the article which is Part 1, I will list some important "DO’s". Part 2 will cover the DON’Ts.
· Do take your time, one step at a time. Do understand that building your business is not something than can be done in a matter of days, not even months in most cases. It’s going to take time, lots of time.
· Do practice Patience! I know it’s not one of my virtues either and it’s really hard to put into practice, but to save your sanity, try to be patient!

Content Layering :: Using Site Architecture To Improve SEO
by: Rob Sullivan
Many times, a site gets very large and its ability to rank well in competitive markets decreases in part because of the size of the site. While we in the business know that content is king, more often than not it is a combination of content and effective site structure which will ultimately help your pages rank.
In this article I look at how to most effectively structure your site to take advantage of this.
I read this great article on layering on the SEOmoz Blog http://www.seomoz.org/blogdetail.php?ID=789 and while it does a good job of explaining what content layering is, I feel it could be improved just a little bit.
I’m not saying it is wrong in any way. In fact the tactic outlined will be very effective for a small to medium sized site, however I have also found another way to organize your site which can be more effective if done properly.
In the article, it explains how you use layers to organize your site. Now we’re not talking about CSS layering or anything like that. It’s more of a site structure issue than anything.
NCOA for Email - Is Your Email Address List Clean and Up-To-Date?
August 27, 2007
Introduction
Shrewd marketers devote a great amount of attention to crafting their email messaging campaign. They scrutinize the subject line, fuss over the content, and carefully monitor the timing of delivery.
Once the perfect message has been created, it is just as important to focus on its successful delivery to the intended recipients. Unfortunately, it is likely that your current email address list has a number of significant problems.
Your List Has Inappropriate Addresses
The beauty of the Internet is that it connects you to everyone. The danger is that there are people out there you would rather not be connected to. Obviously, you want to keep these people, and their moments of malice, off your list. Some common situations include:
1. Bogus Addresses
Some of your visitors will never disclose their email address to you. If an entry is required, they will make something up. A frequent occurrence is some variation of “asdf@asdf.com”, which happens when the user hits random keys.
2. Prank Addresses
An innocent person may be getting added to new lists daily, simply because they made enemies with the wrong person. Sometimes the abuse is a prank subscription from one friend to another; other times it targets a public figure (e.g. billg@microsoft.com).
How to Get Unlimited Free Advertising
August 26, 2007
The opportunities for getting free advertising for your product or services are limited only by your own imagination and energies. There are so many proven ways of promoting your own objectives without cost that it literally boggles the mind just to think of listing them. One way is to write an article relative to your particular expertise and submit it to all the publications and media dealing in the dissemination of related information. In other words, become your own publicity and sales promotions writer. Get the word out; establish yourself as an expert in your field, and “tag-along” everything you write with a quick note listing your address for a catalog, dealership opportunity, or more information.
Another really good way is by becoming a guest on as many of the radio and television talk shows or interview type programs as possible. Actually, this is much easier to bring about than most people realize. Write a letter to the producer of these programs, then follow up with an in-person visit or telephone call. Your initial contact should emphasize that your product or service would be of interest to the listeners or viewers of the program - perhaps even saving them time or money.
Design Matters in our Visual Culture

FIRST IMPRESSIONS.
First impressions often leave lasting impressions. Impressions also result in people’s perceptions. There goes that age-old debate — "Perception versus Reality." I say that perception is someone’s impression of reality. And sometimes… no matter what is reality, you just can’t change people’s perception of a situation or thing.
Let’s define these words…(im·pres·sion) noun: a characteristic, trait, or feature resulting from some influence; the act of impressing. (per·cep·tion) noun: a result of observation.
To make a long story short, "Yes, design does matter!"
? When you meet someone you hope to date, don’t you want to make a good first impression? You want to be in nice clothes, have your hair just right and be in the right place at the right time.
? When you shop for books at the bookstore, doesn’t the nicely designed books attract your attention… let’s be honest, we do sometimes judge a book by it’s cover then read on for content?
? When you meet people, don’t you give them a firm handshake? Why do you do this? Because you want them to know you are confident.

Make Your Web Site Stand Out
August 23, 2007
When visitors add your web site to their Favorites or bookmark your site, what shows up in their list of sites? There are at least two things you can do to make sure your site stands out on anyone’s list of Favorites, including a great idea that very few sites use. If you have a webmaster, he or she should be able to make these changes quickly, and those who maintain their own sites can easily handle these simple tasks.
First, make sure each page of your site has a good title. When you view your site in Internet Explorer or Netscape, what shows up at the very top of the screen? If it says “Home Page” or, even worse, “Untitled,” that is what visitors will see when they include your site in their Favorites. Use “title” tags and add a title that describes the page.
